Out of Devastation and Into His Presence

Tragedy and devastation are experiences none of us can fully prepare for. When my wife and I, as newlyweds, faced the heartbreaking reality of losing our firstborn son just days after his birth, everything in life came to a halt. She never had the chance to hold him after carrying him for nine months. I was able to see him once during his brief time here—his little hands and feet were mine in miniature. The grief was overwhelming, especially for my wife, who carried a deep motherly bond without ever having the chance to embrace him. The pain of that loss left us broken, but also searching for the nearness of God in the midst of devastation.

Just two weeks later, the Lord gave a scripture through a sister in our fellowship that spoke of the firstborn and His priesthood. Though I didn’t fully understand the revelation at the time, I knew God was drawing me closer to Himself. Romans 8:28 reminded us that God works all things together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Fifteen months later, God blessed us with a healthy baby girl, full of life, with so much hair the nurses tied a ribbon on her head! Through this, I learned that even in tragedy, God’s presence becomes a refuge and His promises remain true. Psalm 34:19 declares, “Many are the pains and suffering of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him from them all.” Truly, He is faithful.
